1. Poetry has played an important role in literature since writers began to describe what they saw or how they felt by means of language. Similes and metaphors are two of the methods that they use to form vivid images in reader’s mind. However, people can be confused about the difference between similes and metaphors because they both make some kind of comparison to express or picture poets’ meaning. To put it simply, similes indirectly compare the two ideas and allow them to remain distinct, while metaphors compare two essentially unlike things directly.-
A simile is a figure of speech in which an object is explicitly compared to another object by using the words “like” or “as.” Similes, unlike metaphors, may be specific and direct to create fresh images. For example, a simile that compares a sleeping person with a log would go as follows: “David was tired, so he slept like a log.” In some cases, however, similes are made without using the words “like” or “as,” such as the sentence, “The truth is more obvious than the sun.”
On the other hand, a metaphor comes purely from poetic inspiration. Aristotle(亞里斯多德)considered a talent for using metaphors the greatest gift that a poet may have, “for this alone cannot be learned from others; it is a sign of inborn power.” In contrast to the explicit comparison of the simile, a metaphor is defined as an implied comparison between two seemingly unrelated things or images. Since there is no connecting term like “like” or “as,” it leaves more room for readers to speculate about its meaning, the feeling they get from it. Instead of saying “a brow is as white as marble,” a poet could just say “a marble brow.” Metaphor is widely used at all levels of language and is fundamental in poetry, in which its different functions range from noting a similarity to serving as a central concept and sound image. Similes and metaphors, by combining two different ideas or things, help to create the special power and beauty of poetry.
這是一個閱讀題,已知simile→明喻; metaphor→隱喻
問題:文中紅線處看不懂,翻譯出來怪怪的!!(我在猜compare在這邊的意思:比喻為…..(而非:對比、比較)......)
關於compare........:
我知道compare作「比喻」解的用法是:compare A to B→將A比喻成B
那這邊的compare後面直接+兩個名詞(the two ideas // two essentially unlike things)→→又是當作什麼意思? 是什麼用法?
請老師詳細解釋!!
謝謝。
